Are we ready for cyclonic storm Hamoon?

Wednesday, 25 October 2023

According to meteorologists, a strong cyclone is being formed in the Bay of Bengal. The severe cyclonic storm named as Hamoon may cross Barishal-Chattogram Coast near Bhola by Wednesday morning to noon. Our coastal areas are likely to be flooded with tidal surge. Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to observe the situation with caution. All fishing boats and trawlers in the southeast Bay and deep sea have been advised to come close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.
Natural disasters cannot be contained. But we must try to minimise the damages they cause. There should be attempts to prevent death in such incidents. Weather forecast in the national media should warn of dangers. People should follow them and take precautions. The authorities concerned must be prepared to tackle such weather events. The government should have a contingency plan in place for such occurrences. Awareness among the public, especially about what to do in case of such an event, is also vital.
