Musician Arfin Rumey has been denied bail and ordered to prison in a case filed by his wife over dowry. Judge Arifur Rahman of a Special Tribunal on Violence against Women and Children passed the order on Thursday following a plea by Rumey’s first wife Lamia Islam. Lamia Islam, in a case filed with Mohammadpur Police on Oct 11 said Rumey assaulted her for dowry, her lawyer Arifuddin Ahmed told bdnews24.com. Police arrested the musician and his younger brother Yasin Roni the next day. Rumey secured bail from a lower court through a compromise in which Lamia was supposed to get Tk 20,00,000 which ,her lawyer alleged, he reneged on. Meanwhile, police on Jan 19 submitted a chargesheet to court against Rumey. The tribunal was scheduled to take the chargesheet into congnisance and the accused was to appear in court on Thursday. Rumey as usual showed up and pleaded to the judge for bail. But the judge ordered him to prison for ‘breach of assurance." His first wife, the case’s plaintiff, was also present in court. She has also accused Rumey’s mother and younger brother for torture, said Lamia’s lawyer, but the two were let off following a report by the investigation officer. Rumey has been demanding Tk 20,00,000 as dowry from his wife ever since their marriage. He would beat her up for the money, according to case details. Rumey, who quickly made his name in Bangladesh’s music industry, got into a controversy after he married again, without getting a divorce from his first wife, from whom he has a son.
