Thousands of Argentine football fans thronged Dhaka University on Monday night to watch Argentina's World Cup clash against Austria, with Argentine Ambassador to Bangladesh Marcelo Carlos Cesa joining the supporters at Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall field amid a carnival-like atmosphere on the campus.
The ambassador arrived at the venue before the kickoff and was accompanied by Ruli, a close associate of Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi, along with members of his team.
Their presence drew cheers from students and football enthusiasts gathered on the campus.
The university's Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) area, Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall, Kabi Jasimuddin Hall, Fuller Road and the field of Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Hall turned into vibrant gathering spots as supporters wearing Argentina jerseys waved flags and took part in various celebrations.
Although the match was scheduled to begin at 11:00pm, football fans started gathering at the venues from the evening.
Expressing his admiration for the passion of Bangladeshi supporters, Ambassador Cesa said he felt as though he was in Argentina.
"Being here, I feel the same atmosphere as in my own country," he said, thanking Bangladeshi fans for their immense love and support for the South American nation.
Ruli also expressed his affection for Bangladesh, saying: "Bangladesh, I love you."
