The government decided to deploy troops across the country for election duty from December 12 to ensure security in the upcoming parliament and upazila elections, being held in close succession in a changed context, reports UNB.
"The troops will remain on duty until December 31. The army will also be deployed outside the polling centres and act as both striking and reserve force," Election Commission Secretary M Humayun Kabir told the media after a meeting at the EC Wednesday.
He said the home ministry would soon issue a circular on deployment of army for policing the polls, this time going to be held under strict rules based on politico-electoral reforms done in the interim period against the backdrop of past crisis.
Replying to a query, Humayun Kabir said the EC did not finalise its election budget yet. They will soon meet with the finance ministry to settle the matter.
Present, among others, at the meeting were the IGP, the DG of RAB, the DG of BDR, the home secretary and heads of different intelligence agencies.
The meeting on "9th National Parliamentary Election 2008 and Law and Order" was held between the Election Commission (EC) and the heads of different law-enforcing agencies at the auditorium of the EC Secretariat.
