FE Report
The government might involve the armed forces in distribution of urea fertiliser among the farmers during the peak season of Boro cultivation in December-March period.
"The involvement of the army personnel in the management of fertiliser distribution at the field level in some parts of the country is under active consideration of the government," a senior official in the Ministry of Industries told the FE.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) has allocated 259,866 tonnes of urea fertiliser for distribution among the farmers in December, the beginning of the Boro cultivation season, BCIC officials said.
They said the allocation has been made as per the requirement for urea fertiliser in December.
Of total allocation, the BCIC officials said, 10,763 tonnes for Comilla, 9,725 tonnes for Dinajpur, 9,943 tonnes for Bogra, 9,940 tonnes for Jessore, 8,412 tonnes for Kurigram and 8,794 tonnes for Rajshahi.
Sources said there are about 430,000 tonnes of urea fertiliser in the stock of the BCIC. A process for import of 32,000 tonnes of urea fertiliser is under progress.
They said the country will import 1.3 million tonnes of urea fertiliser in the current fiscal against 1.0 million tonnes in the previous year as the production capacity of many fertiliser plants has declined.
