Army to be deployed in 'vulnerable' areas: CEC
Thursday, 9 December 2010
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) ATM Shamsul Huda has announced army deployment in some 'vulnerable' municipalities, reports bdnews24.com.
The CEC made the announcement while speaking to journalists at the Election Commission (EC) Wednesday.
Election Commissioner M Sakhawat Hossain Sunday told reporters that the commission was observing the situation and "will deploy army on a short notice if it deemed it necessary".
The CEC's announcement came a day after the ruling party general secretary said that he felt it was necessary to deploy army during the municipal elections, adding, "there is nothing to fear".
The opposition party, however, preferred army deployment to make municipal elections free and fair.
"We believe holding a fair election will be impossible if army are not deployed," BNP standing committee member MK Anwar said.
