Wednesday, 22 August 2007

FE Report
The government decided Sunday to withdraw the army camp from the trouble-torn Dhaka University campus by today (Wednesday). The withdrawal started from 8 pm Tuesday.
A top-level meeting of the government, presided over by Chief Adviser Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed, also expressed 'deep regret' at the incidents on the DU campus and appealed for calm.
The meeting also decided to conduct a judicial inquiry into the incidents on the campus since Monday morning. Advisers concerned, the chief of the Army Staff, Home Secretary, Pro-Vice Chancellor of DU, chiefs of law enforcing agencies and high civil and military officials were present at the meeting among others.
"The meeting reviewed the situation arising out of disturbances since Monday evening," said an official announcement.
Adopting the decisions, the meeting appealed to all concerned to maintain peace and discipline on the campus.
The government handout said the army has already started an inquiry into the "unfortunate" incident that occurred in the Dhaka University playground. The inquiry will be completed soon and action will be taken against the persons found responsible following the inquiry.
