Army's role in nation dev got institutional shape: President

President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed said Wednesday the role of Bangladesh Army in achieving national development, extending cooperation to maintain internal public order and serving humanity has got institutional shape, reports BSS.
"Bangladesh Army is the symbol of our independence and sovereignty, as well as our pride. They rescued the country from an anarchic situation by playing a responsible role responding to the national need at the crucial moment in January 2007," he added.
The President said this while addressing the Army Headquarters Selection Board- 2008 meeting at the Bangladesh Army Headquarters' Conference Room in Dhaka Cantonment in the city.
Chief of Army Staff General Moeen U Ahmed, Principal Staff Officer of Armed Forces Division Lt. General Md. Abdul Mubeen and Quarter Master General Lt. General Md. Jahangir Alam Choudhury, among others, were present.
The President said the present caretaker government had made necessary modernisation and expansion to prepare strong armed forces to face the challenges of the 21st century.
He termed Bangladesh Army as the integral part of national development and progress and said they had always stood by the people for the welfare of the country.
He expressed hope that the Army would continue to contribute to the welfare of the motherland in the days to come. "I hope that as members of disciplined professional forces, you will continue discharging all duties bestowed upon you with sincerity, integrity and firmness and with high level of patriotism" he added.
Referring to the various role of Army in different activities undertaken by the present government including checking corruption and serious crimes, preparing national identity card and electoral roll with photographs, the President said the pioneering role of Bangladesh Army has been highly praised at home and abroad.
He also praised the role of Bangladesh army in rescue, relief and rehabilitation activities for the cyclone-affected people in southern part of the country.
Describing the role of Army Headquarters Selection Board as very important in giving promotion of Army officials, he hoped that the board members would find out efficient officers for promotion remaining impartial and above everything. "The dynamism of the Army depends on selection of skilled, eligible and qualified officers by the board," he added.
The President expressed the hope that army officers would uphold and consolidate the dignity, which the Bangladesh army has earned at the national and international levels through their professional efficiency, devotion and responsibility in the days to come.
