Around 450 diarrhoea patients get admitted to Matlab icddr,b every day

CHANDPUR, Apr 07: Around 450 diarrhoea patients are admitted every day to the icddr,b Hospital at Matlab Dakhshin Upazila Sadar in Chandpur district.
According to the hospital's record book, a total of 2,567 patients with diarrhoea have been admitted to this hospital till Wednesday (April 6) since April 01.
The hospital's Chief Medical Officer Dr Fazal Huque said, "On an average, daily 450 patients of different ages are being rushed to this hospital. Most patients are aged from six/seven days up to 70 years."
He further said, "The excess patients, nearly 400, have been accommodated at the hospital corridors with tents around."
"Diarrhea is now caused due to the change of weather, taking stale/adulterated food stuffs and impure water in the open shops and restaurants. No patients have so far died here", he added.
Visiting the hospital, it has been seen that patients with diarrhoeal ailments are being rushed to this hospital by autorickshaws from far-off places in Faridganj, Kochua, Shahrasti, Haimchar, Hajiganj, Chandpur Sadar Upazilas under Chandpur district and Munshiganj, Daudkandi, Gouripur, Brahamnpara, Burichong, Chandina, Chouddagram, Titash, Muradnagar, Nangolcoat -all under Cumilla, Roypur, Ramganj and Luxmipur Sadar, Vedorganj, Tarabuniya, Shakhipur under Shariatpur and some other riverine remote places in Narayanganj district.
Patients Nusrat Jahan, 21, a resident of Shahtoli village, said, "They gave proper treatment. I am satisfied with medicare facilities too".
Syed Ahammad Khan, 60, of the Mohamaya area under Chandpur Sadar, said, "The doctors, nurses and health staffs can hardly cope with the increasing number of patients. Still they are working hard to render service to the patients. I am improving gradually."
According to the hospital source, at present five doctors, six nurses and 20 health staffs are working round the clock and taking good care of the patients. It takes two/three days to get cured of diarrhoeal diseases.
