Arraignment hearing again defers to June 19
Monday, 16 June 2008
A special court that deals with corruption cases Sunday again deferred to June 19 the hearing on framing charges against detained BNP senior joint secretary general Tarique Rahman and ex state minister Lutfozzaman Babar and others in Tk 210 million (Tk 21 crore) bribery case, reports UNB.
Judge Shahed Noor Uddin passed the order of deferment as the prosecution failed to produce Tarique on health ground. The two other accused, now in custody, Babar and Abu Sufian were produced before the court.
As the court resumed at 10:45 am, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mian, the counsel for Tarique, prayed for a long adjournment on the ground that his client is not fit for facing case proceedings.
"A physically unfit person cannot be put on trial," he submitted.
Making out a case for sending Tarique abroad for treatment, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia told the court that despite having been under treatment in the country for long, his health condition is not improving, rather deteriorating.
Quoting medical board report, he told the court that Tarique's life is in danger and he would be physically invalid for life if his appropriate treatment abroad is not ensured soon.
