Arrest killers of labour activist Aminul: HRW
Thursday, 3 April 2014
Human Rights Watch (HRW) Wednesday said the government of Bangladesh should make public what efforts have been made to investigate the abduction, torture, and killing of the labour rights activist Aminul Islam two years ago, including alleged links to state officials, reports UNB.
While police have filed charges against a missing suspect, there have been no apparent efforts to investigate allegations that members of Bangladeshi security forces were part of the conspiracy to kill the labour activist, said the New York-based international rights body in a statement Wednesday.
According to the HRW report, Amibul Islam (39), was a trade union organiser with the Bangladesh Centre for Workers Solidarity (BCWS), which supports the rights of factory workers in the garment and seafood industries.
He disappeared on April 4, 2012 and his body was discovered two days later, almost 100 kilometres from where he was last seen, and showed signs of torture under circumstances that raise concerns of involvement by Bangladeshi security forces, the rights body said.
