Arrest of Pabna journalist in extortion cases draws fire

PABNA, May 27: A journalist was held in two extortion cases filed with Bera police station Wednesday night. The journalists of the district have protested so-called extortion cases and demanded his release immediately.
The victim was identified as Arifur Rahman Arab, Bera Upazila Correspondent of the Daily Inqilab also the editor of 'A Juger Dip' a local weekly newspaper.
Police informed that Abdul Hakim and Nurul Islam filed two separate cases with Bera police station against Arifur Rahman Arab. After filing the cases the police arrested him from his residence of village Daspara of Bera municipality area at about 8pm.
Officer-in-Charge(OC) of Bera police station Jillur Rahman told that the police arrested him after extortion cases were filed against him. He was produced at Pabna court Thursday, the OC said.
Meanwhile, the journalists of Pabna district headquarters, Bera Upazila unit Press Club and other places of the district held separate programmes protesting the arrest of Arab in false cases. Journalists of Bera Press Club held an urgent meeting Thursday. The journalists demanded his release immediately.
Journalists claimed that the police arrested him in false cases as he (victim) published reports on crimes and political crimes in his newspapers. Arab published several reports against Bera municipality mayor also the ruling party leader that might be the reason behind his arrest, sources said.
