The International Crimes Tribunal has withdrawn the arrest warrant for Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Zafrullah Chowdhury following a stay order by the chamber judge.
The tribunal withdrew the warrant when Chowdhury submitted a petition on Sunday, attaching copy of the stay order. Tribunal’s Acting Deputy Registrar Md Aftabuzzaman said the tribunal stayed the arrest warrant until the next order.
Chowdhury was found guilty of contempt of court for his statement expressing concern over British journalist David Bergman's conviction on June 10. The tribunal ordered him to stand in the dock for an hour and fined Tk 5,000. It also said he would have to spend a month in jail if he did not pay the fine. He stood in the dock for an hour as punishment but later said he would not pay the fine.
The chamber judge on June 16 stayed the penalty until July 5 after a preliminary hearing on a petition filed by Chowdhury. He faced the warrant on June 18, as the stay order did not reach the tribunal, according to bdnews24.com.
