Arrested rickshaw driver gets bail

Monday, 18 August 2025

A Dhaka court has granted bail to Azizur Rahman, the rickshaw driver assaulted near Dhanmondi Road No. 32 while paying tribute to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his death anniversary, in a case tied to the July Uprising, reports bdnews24.com.
Metropolitan Magistrate MA Azharul Islam issued the order after a hearing on Sunday. Azizur has been accused of attempting to kill Md Ariful Islam, who was shot during a protest march in Dhaka's Science Lab area on Aug 4 last year.
Azizur's lawyer Farzana Yeasmin Rakhi confirmed the court's decision.
He was beaten by a mob on Friday while paying tribute at Dhanmondi Road No. 32 before turning him over to police custody.
Meanwhile, the interim government has sought an explanation as to why rickshaw-puller Azizur Rahman, who went to Dhanmondi 32 to pay respects on the anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's assassination, was arrested in an attempted murder case.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Chief Advisor's Office said it had asked the chief of Dhanmondi Police Station to explain the arrest.
It also noted that Dhaka Metropolitan Police is reviewing whether the officer's recent actions and statements show any inconsistencies.
The statement added that under the recently amended Section 173(A) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, authorities have directed a swift submission of the investigation report concerning Azizur's alleged involvement in the case.
