Arresting the problem of drug abuse

Saturday, 2 December 2023

These days, the number of drug addicts has been rising in Bangladesh. According to an estimate, the country has at least eight million individuals engaging in drug use with cannabis being the most commonly abused substance. The high incidence of drug abuse has raised concerns about the potential spread of an HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) epidemic. Thousands of people between the ages of 15 and 50 misuse prescription drugs for non-medical reasons. Very few of these drug addicts are genuinely committed to breaking free from addiction as the majority claimed that discontinuing drug use was an overwhelming challenge due to the accessibility of drugs. Drugs are readily available in every locality. Another study says that one out of every ten tertiary-level students in our country is a drug addict. The students consume drugs for several reasons. These include insecure future, a lack of job opportunities, financial problems, family issues, the influence of bad company and many others.
Drug addiction is a serious health concern that requires an immediate and comprehensive solution. This involves thoroughly examination of and addressing its root causes, implementation of strict regulations to control the trade of drugs and providing necessary resources and support for addiction treatment and recovery. Law enforcement agencies can play a critical role in tracking and dismantling drug mafias. The well-being and progress of our nation depend on these actions. Therefore, the authorities concerned must act promptly and decisively to tackle this pressing issue, paving the way for a healthier and drug-free Bangladesh.
