Arsenic above permitted level found in 29pc tubewells: Ashraful

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam said in Parliament on Tuesday that the presence of arsenic above the permitted level was found in 29 per cent of tubewells in the country. “The presence of more than 50ppb arsenic (permitted level) was found in 1.5 million tube-wells after testing 5.0 million tube-wells in the country’s 271 upazilas,” he said, replying to a starred question of ruling Awami League MP AKM Rahmatullah (Dhaka-11). Syed Ashraful informed the House that safe water source for every 93 people has been ensured in the rural areas and the water supply coverage has increased to 88 per cent from 82 per cent, according to a news agency.
