Arsenic in water of 5841 tube wells detected

FARIDPUR, Oct 17: Arsenic beyond tolerable limit has been detected in the waters of 5841 tube wells at 118 villages under Alfadanga Upazila in the district.
After detection of arsenic in the tube wells, about 56831 families of those villages are still drinking water polluted with arsenic poison and becoming victims of arsenic related diseases.
A total of 156 people have so far been infected with arsenic related diseases.
A study conducted by Arsenic Volunteer Organisation for Social Development Project disclosed this recently.
The organisation finished its responsibility by marking the tube wells having arsenic with red colour and the tube-wells free from with blue colour.
Seeing the red marks, the people of the aforesaid villages prevented themselves from drinking the waters of those tube wells. But with the passage of time the red marks emitted and the people also forgot the matter.
The people of the villages are still drinking water of the arsenic affected tube wells as there is no alternative source of procuring drinking water from. Presently, disastrous effect of arsenic poisoning has assumed an alarming turn and about 0.1 million people of Alfadanga Upazila are living under the threat of arsenic related disease.
