Arum a potential exportable vegetable

NILPHAMARI, Oct 4: Exportable vegetable Loti Kachu (arum) has a potential to becultivated commercially in Nilphamari district. At present Loti kachu is very sporadically and occasionally available in the markets.
Sources said Loti kachu has a good demand in local and international markets. It is commercially cultivated in Joypurhat and in the southern parts of Dinajpur district as an exportable vegetable. The product is exported from there to many countries of Europe and America.
While contacted, Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Deputy Director (Nilphamari) Younus Ali said they introduced a pilot project of Loti kachu cultivation in Kamar Pukur union parishad of Saidpur upazilla that was proved very successful and the DAE has decided to expand the cultivation across the district.
Loti kachu cultivation in the homestead and uncultivable low land could be a permanent cash crop of the poor villagers of the district, experts said.
