CHANDPUR, Aug 03: Marginal farmer Bashirullah Mia has brought fortune in his life through arum cultivation in wet land at Latifpur village under Kachua Upazila of the district.
Now, many small farmers are following the successful path of Bashirullah and cultivating arum, a kind of vegetable that is enriched with nutrition.
Mainly inspired by the UZ and local agri experts, Bashirullah Mia, 40, has undertaken a plan to cultivate arum on his 48 decimals of land and spent around Tk 10,000.
But, he is now getting back around Tk 50,000 by selling arum.
Applying modern irrigation facilities, getting agri-incentives and with the assistance from local agri officials Bashirullah has done remarkable progress in growing arum. This has attracted attention of his fellowmen.
While talking, Bashirullah has told the FE that arum cultivation needs no pesticide as there is no pest attack or any other disease. Besides, there is no possibility of financial loss in this cultivation.
Observing the big success of arum cultivation, many farmers are getting interested to grow this arum. Arum has a good demand in vegetable markets.
Bashiullah says he has been cultivating this arum for the past few years because it is demandable and also economically viable.
"I spent Tk 20,000 on arum farming and already got Tk 10,000 by selling lotis. I will get Tk 40,000 more by selling arum in future."
Agriculturist Mohammad Mezbahuddin has told the FE that when vegetable deficits occur in markets, arum and loti can fulfil this deficit. Arum cultivation is profitable and farmers can grow by spending a small amount of money.
