Arum lobe cultivation brings solvency to farmers

JOYPURHAT, Oct 7: Arum lobe cultivation gains popularity to all type of farmers in Joypurhat. Now its cultivation has been spread in the whole district. Specialy it is very much cultivated in Panchbibi Upazila and a big Bazar has been created in the Upazila. Due to beneficiary farmers of the district are very much interested to cultivate this vegetable item. Farmers have been cultivating this potential exportable lobes for last 15 years. Within short time being benefited they are rushing to lobe cultivation. From Joypurhat this lobe is being exported in foreign countries.
This running season 1thousand and 6 hundred hectares of lands has been brought under the lobe cultivation. said Abdul Mazid an officer of Joypurhat Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE).
It grows plenty in rainy season and watery or low lying fields. It is produced in 12 to 20 inches from the Arum body. Although the Arum is popular vegetable to all but its lobe gains more popularity than Arum in the country and in foreign country.
These creepers or lobe is discovered by peasants in the early stage were confined in a few farmers but later it was spread widely. Being delicious and nutritious food its demand is increasing day by day. To get maximum profit peasants have started its cultivation commercially. Although in early the Arum body was sold with demand but now its lobe is very popular to the customers.
Anowar Hossain a farmer of Karia village under Panchbibi Upazila said to the correspondent that it needs five months time for maturity and does not require more fertilizer and irrigation so it is produced easily. 24-30 thousand Taka is needed for production cost per acres and the products earns 90 thousand to 1 lakh Tk. and his financial condition is very fine, he added.
Like Anowar most of the farmers in the district expressed the same idea to FE correspondent that they are now solvent enough to cultivate this and interested for more cultivation. They also said since, it does not need more costing, farmers are agree to cultivate this item. It is a profitable vegetable but sometime they do not get real price for local traders, they added.
The creeper produced in Joypurhat is supplied to Dhaka, Gajipur, Tangail, Sylhet, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna etc and many others countries. From a few years it is being exported to Britain, America, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman etc. Dhaka based three companies namely Urasia, Golden Harvest and Merino Limited are exporting these golden creepers from Bangladesh.
Abdus Sobhan Fardousi, deputy director of District Agriculture Extension office, said that this product is very profitable than others vegetable item in same time. Farmers can grow this in their low or watery lands. We appreciate them to grow this. There are some problem as there is no cold storage to preserve the creepers. So farmers can not get real price of their product.
