Ashraf assures upazila chairmen of solving 'problems' soon

Friday, 17 April 2009

Local Government and Rural Development Minister Syed Ashraful Islam Thursday urged the aggrieved upazila chairmen to have patience and assured all problems would be solved as soon as the Upazila Parishad fully starts functioning and takes an institutional shape, reports UNB.
Giving his reaction over some upazila chairmen's threat to declare MPs 'unwanted persons' in their respective areas apparently for a clash with authority, the LGRD Minister told reporters that a handful of the chairmen made such remarks. However, he said the government would look into the problem.
He said the Upazila Parishad will be functioning under the Upazila Parishad Act amended during the first session of the present parliament.
On the advisory role of MPs in the Upazila Parishad, as per the provision of the amended law, he said MPs would not give any advice which will turn out to be a kind of revenge. "Both MP and upazila chairman are elected representatives and none has got the full power," said the Local Government Minister to dispel the skepticism.
Ashraful deplored that some newspapers are publishing provocative stories which are not correct in approach. "Let the Upazila Parishads start work," he said.
In reply to a question, he said that, if necessary, the government will sit with the upazila chairmen. He said allocation was made for cars, offices and manpower for upazila chairmen.
On city-corporation law, he said the relevant ordinances will be amended to expand the budgets of the city corporations and increase the revenue earnings.
Asked about the Awami League MP Capt (retd) Gias Uddin's alleged instigation to beat up journalists in Gaffargaon, Ashraful said the Prime Minister gave him the responsibility to look into the matter and necessary instructions were given.
