Ashuganj container terminal to get Ecnec nod

Wednesday, 15 December 2010

The Executive Committee of National Economic Council (Ecnec) is expected to approve Ashuganj Container Terminal project next week to facilitate Indian cargo movement through Bangladesh territory, reports bdnews24.com.
"We've sent the proposal and Ecnec is likely to approve the project in its next meeting Tuesday," BIWTA Secretary Monowar Hossain said.
At the initial stage, the container terminal will have capacity to handle 0.1 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TUEs) with an expansion capacity of another 0.1 million TEUs, he said.
The project, involving about Tk 2.5 billion, is expected to be completed by 2013.
The Indian government will provide necessary funds for the development of the terminal.
The government declared Ashuganj as the second transshipment point in May this year under the protocol on Inland Water Transit and Trade.
