Asian stocks gain

Sunday, 2 September 2007

HONG KONG, Sept 1 (AFP): Asian stock markets gained sharply Friday after a report the United States will launch a plan to nurse the ailing housing sector, with technology stocks rising on strong earnings news.
Bucking a sluggish performance overnight on Wall Street, Asian markets rose for a second straight day, cheering results from US computer giant Dell that raised hopes for the prospects of the region's own technology firms.
The Tokyo bourse soared on a depreciation of the yen, which had spiked up in recent weeks in response to the turmoil on equity markets, while Hong Kong and Shanghai both hit record highs. European stock markets also opened firmer.
