Asif Mahmud announces election race for Dhaka-10

Saturday, 13 December 2025

Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, a former advisor to the interim government, has announced that he will contest the upcoming 13th national election as an independent candidate from the Dhaka-10 constituency, reports bdnews24.com.
He made the announcement in a video posted on his Facebook page on Friday, a day after the election schedule was declared.
"I will contest as an independent candidate in the Dhaka-10 constituency in the upcoming parliamentary election. Your cooperation and support is needed," he wrote in a caption accompanying the video post.
The Dhaka-10 constituency comprises the Dhanmondi, New Market, Kalabagan and Hazaribagh areas. The National Citizen Party (NCP), formed by leaders of last year's July Uprising, has not nominated any candidate for the seat. The BNP has named Sheikh Rabiul Alam Rabi, a member of its national executive committee.
Asif Mahmud had earlier indicated his intention to run as an independent candidate from a Dhaka constituency. On Nov 9, while still serving as an advisor, he visited the Dhanmondi election office to transfer his voter registration from his home district of Cumilla to Dhaka.
He resigned from the interim government earlier this week, shortly before speculation about his possible entry into the Gono Odhikar Parishad gained momentum. The party's General Secretary Rashed Khan later confirmed that preliminary discussions had taken place, but said no final decision had been made.
Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin announced the election schedule on Thursday, setting Feb 12 for both the election and the referendum.
