ISLAMABAD: President Asif Zardari on Saturday refused to play the "Sindh card" to cope with the present crisis, saying he did not want to "become another Mujibur Rehman", reports Daily Times.
"We are a federation... we will support it because we have a long struggle for the federation and democracy," the president said during the Pakistan People's Party's (PPP) Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting that concluded on Saturday with a consensus to avoid confrontation between state institutions. The participants also opined that there should be no judicial interference in the executive's affairs.
The members called the meeting extremely important in the current political scenario, saying it gave the CEC members a chance to speak their hearts out.
'Sindh card': One of the most emotive speeches was made by Syed Khurshid Shah, who urged the party to play its "Sindh card" to steer clear of the political chaos.
But several leaders, including Zardari, rejected the proposal, saying the PPP was a national party and was opposed to nationalist sentiments.
Shah had said that the province was "not ready to give any more sacrifices. A mindset is evolving in Sindh, we have received three bodies - Liaquat Ali Khan, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto. We have always been meted a step-motherly treatment.”
