India’s Assam state government has opposed a proposal from the Indian central government to grant visa-free entry of Bangladeshi nationals below 18 years and above 65 years of age, reported Indian media on Thursday. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi at a press conference in Guwahati said the Narendra Modi government has sent a list of proposals to the state government this month seeking opinion on the same. Quoting Gogoi the reports run by Indian Express and The Economic Times said a few days ago the Centre has sent Assam government a proposal seeking their opinion regarding the lifting of visa for Bangladeshi nationals for those below 18 years and above 65 years of age. “We’ve expressed our opposition to this,” Gogoi was quoted as saying. The central government has sought Assam government’s opinion for multiple-entry in a single visa which was also opposed, according to a news agency.
