FE Report
The government has appointed Professor Atiur Rahman, a development researcher, as Bangladesh Bank's 10th governor for a four-year term.
An establishment ministry order issued on Wednesday said Atiur, a former BIDS research fellow who now runs an NGO and teaches development studies at Dhaka University, would replace the outgoing governor Salehuddin Ahmed who ends his four-year tenure on Thursday.
Mr Atiur's appointment will come into effect from May 1, the order said.
The Dhaka University professor served as a director of Sonali Bank and later became the chairman of the state-owned Janata Bank during the 1996-2001 Awami League-led government.
Atiur's research focussed on poverty, and the most acclaimed included work on char (shoal) dwellers and poverty alleviation.
The governor-designate at an exclusive interview with the FE recently said he would maintain the accommodative policy and also encourage banks to adopt pro-poor credit policy.
The banks would be given targets in lending, deposit, remittance and other areas and the central bank will provide them with resource support to fulfill them, he said.
