Aug 4 polls under emergency of better standard than past elections: FEMA

Monday, 11 August 2008

The Fair Election Monitoring Alliance (FEMA) Sunday described the August 4 local body polls held under the state of emergency as of better standard than any other elections in the past, reports UNB.

"The state of emergency has enhanced the ordinary people's courage to cast their votes," FEMA secretary general Mohammad Abdul Matin said in reply to a question at a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club.

FEMA chairman Munira Khan, however, observed that another one or two elections should be held without emergency as test case to compare the elections under the state of emergency.

FEMA launched its election observation report at the press conference, saying that the August 4 elections deserved appreciation as these were of better standard than any elections in the past.

In the report, the FEMA election observers identified some factors, including high voter turnout and adequate presence of law enforcers at polling centres, to ensure exercising right to franchise safely during the elections to four city corporations and nine municipalities.

"The voter turnout was 75 per cent at Rajshahi, 77.81 per cent at Khulna, 82 per cent at Barisal and 75 per cent at Sylhet," FEMA secretary general said quoting the report.
