Australia bat, Broad ruled out
Friday, 18 September 2009
Australia won their first toss of the series and elected to bat in the sixth one-day international against England at Trent Bridge. England must attempt to reverse their five-match losing streak without the services of Stuart Broad or Luke Wright, both of whom have been ruled out of the final two ODIs because of injury, according to website cricinfo.
A tendon in Broad's right knee became inflamed after the fifth ODI at Trent Bridge. He is not in doubt for the Champions Trophy but the England medical staff felt it was wise to allow the allrounder an extra few days rest before departing for South Africa. Broad has experienced discomfort in the knee for the better part of two years, but only in recent days has the pain increased to the point where sidelining him became necessary. James Anderson has returned from his designated rest period and will replace Broad in the starting XI.
As in the fifth ODI, Dimitri Mascharenas will slot in for Wright. Medical staff will review the Sussex allrounder's condition in the next week before deciding whether he is fit to join the England touring party in South Africa for the Champions Trophy. England have made one further change to their starting XI for the sixth ODI, with Nottingham local Graeme Swann taking the place of Adil Rashid.
Australia have also made two changes from the line-up that defeated England by four-wickets on Tuesday, with Brett Lee and James Hopes replacing Mitchell Johnson and Michael Clarke. Johnson and Clarke have been omitted in line with Australia's resting policy, and should be available for the final ODI at Chester-le-Street on Sunday.
