Australia provides over Tk 2.0m emergency aid for flood victims

Tuesday, 28 August 2007

The Australian High Commission in Bangladesh will provide over Tk 2.0 million to Save the Children, UK and Bangladesh Protibandhi Kallyan Samity under its Direct Aid Programme 2007-08 for quick distribution of relief to the flood victims of Sirajganj, Gaibandha and Chandpur districts, said a press release.
The assistance is in addition to Australia's contribution of AUD 1.6 million towards flood relief that was announced by Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer earlier this month.
The emergency support will assist over 6,317 people suffering from the flood during the current monsoon with their families including disabled members.
The relief will be spent on food, medicines and water purifying tablets. It will also provide education materials, including textbooks and stationery to the children in ten primary schools of the districts.
"Australia has always been supportive of Bangladesh in its time of need", said Australian High Commissioner Douglas Foskett. "This contribution reflects the goodwill and the continuing strong bonds that exist between our two countries", he added.
