RAJSHAHI, Aug 11: Teachers, students and guardians of Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST), Rajshahi campus, have protested against the government decision to close all outer campuses of the private universities and said, the government should reconsider it for the sake of greater interest of the students and their education facilities. They further said, no decision about the closure of outer campuses should be taken without judging the quality of education and all other facilities.
Police on Friday, however, arrested eight students of AUST who went on a rampage at the varsity campus Friday morning in protest against the news published in a national Bangla daily that the authorities of AUST used to sell certificates to the students and subsequently against another news of closure of all outer campuses of private varsities out of the capital.
Meanwhile, teachers and students of AUST with anger termed the report of the Bangla newspaper regarding selling of certificates completely baseless and motivated. They said, the final examination of the first batch of students admitted in this varsity had not yet been completed. So, how the question of selling certificates could arise.
They said, an international quality education was maintained in AUST, Rajshahi and informed there were 11 well equipped science laboratory and one language laboratories in AUST campus, Rajshahi. The laboratories are : Electrical circuit lab, Digital electronics lab, physics lab, chemistry lab, Mechanical drawing lab, Computer lab, Simulation lab, Telecommunication lab, Microwave and satellite communication lab and language laboratory. They said, there was no compromise with the standard of education here and challenged that the Rajshahi campus of AUST had such sophisticated equipment in the microwave and satellite communication laboratory which no other university in Bangladesh, even the BUET did not have and many of their equipment were superior and more sophisticated than those in the RUET.
The teachers of the varsity, however, failed to say on what ground the students demonstrated. They further said, though the campus of AUST, Rajshahi, was now running in rented buildings, some 16 bighas of land had been procured at the outskirts of the city to construct a full-fledged campus. The construction work would start soon. Professor Amanullah, Co-ordinator (incharge) of AUST, Rajshahi campus mentioned, the students had become agitated on reading the news in the newspaper. He said he did not get any official letter about the closure of the campus and said, the AUST, Rajshahi campus, would continue its academic activities according to the direction of the ministry of education.
However, students and teachers of AUST said the operation of the University Grants Commission(UGC) in its report had approved outer campuses of five private universities including that of AUST and there was no possibility to close any outer campus till the end of academic activities of the current batches.
