Authorities to step up security during polls campaign

British High Commissioner (HC) Stephen Evans Sunday expressed the hope that the authorities concerned would take all necessary steps to ensure peaceful campaign and security and safety of the leaders of major parties, reports UNB.
Talking to journalists after meeting Foreign Advisor Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury at the Foreign Ministry, the HC, however, would not comment on present security situation in the wake of reported threat on Awami League (AL) president Sheikh Hasina.
"I am not in a position to comment on that particular press report," he said, adding, the authorities would take necessary steps so all can campaign peacefully and ensure a peaceful election day and free, fair and credible polls for establishment of a democratically elected government.
Evans said the caretaker government (CG) and the Election Commission (EC) have worked hard to ensure free and fair election. He said, "Of course we will have the opportunity to listen to the views of domestic and international observers."
He said Britain will work very closely with the incoming democratically elected government.
