Authority 'should not frighten' countrymen about earthquake

Tuesday, 28 September 2010

FE Report
Authority should focus more on earthquake preparedness rather than frightening countrymen. Speakers at a press conference, organised for increasing mass awareness about earthquake preparedness, expressed their concern for lack of awareness among the public Monday.
Organised by Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) at VIP lounge of National Press Club, the press briefing was chaired by BDRCS chief M S Akbar, MP.
"Recent two incidences of earthquake just after Eid-ul-fitr created fear among public. What is most expected is preparation to minimise damages of earthquake as it cannot be predicted earlier", said BDRCS chief.
Highlighting the role of Red Crescent Society Akbar said the society is going to take massive awareness campaign around the country.
This year Bangladesh experienced at least 19 earthquakes, of which most of them were 4 to 5.4 magnitudes on the Richter scale. Four of those 19 earthquake's epicentre was inside Bangladesh and rests are from neighbouring countries. Of these four, 3 stemmed from Chandpur. Experts consider this region as very dangerous due to its proximity to Dhaka.
BDRCS deputy director of Earthquake SM Ahmed Tuhin made a visual presentation of upcoming programmes where they will teach students as volunteers, meet 36,000 families door to door, distribute printed materials and arrange street dramas and multimedia shows to increase awareness.
