FE Report
Auto-rickshaw drivers Sunday demanded an end to tyranny of owners and police harassment and also implementation of the government-fixed daily rent to be paid to the owners.
The demands were made at a human-chain programme organised by Dhaka District Four-Stroke Auto-rickshaw (CNG) Drivers Union at Muktangon in the capital.
At the programme the drivers accused auto-rickshaw owners of charging higher daily rents. They urged the government to ensure implementation of the daily rent of Tk 450 and also called upon the authority concerned to stop harassment by police in the name of checking of papers.
The drivers also urged the authorities concerned to provide 5,000 CNG auto-rickshaws to drivers at low price and construct parking stands at key city points.
Bangladesh Biplobi Workers Party general secretary Saiful Haque expressed solidarity with the drivers during the hour-long programme, which started at 11:30am.
He said: "The auto-rickshaw owners realise Tk 700 to Tk 750 from the drivers each as daily rent against the government-fixed Tk 450. This has made their lives difficult."
He said the police harassment had become a daily event.
Union president Md Rafiqul Islam and general secretary Nazimuddin Rana also spoke, among others, on the occasion.
Over 400 auto-rickshaw drivers took part in the human-chain programme.
