Bangladesh Bank governor Dr Salehuddin Ahmed inaugurated Thursday the real time online banking system of the NCC Bank Limited saying automation in banks is essential to delivery quick services to customers.
Speaking as chief guest at a city hotel the central bank governor said the latest addition in the NCC Bank's customer service will help fulfill the growing need of banking technologies.
Under the new system, customers of NCC Bank will enjoy online banking at any branch through ATM & Debit Card facility, Tele-Banking, Internet Banking and SMS Banking. The real time online banking of NCC Bank will be available in all its 56 branches round the clock.
Dr Salehuddin thanked NCC Bank management for bringing the bank under 24-hours online network. He also thanked the local firm, Flora Systems, for developing the local software for the NCC Bank automation.
He said: "I have told several times that our people living abroad have expertise. They can utilise their knowledge here. But they do not get opportunity."
"Hiring people from abroad is costlier. But we do not want to spend the same amount for the native people living abroad, who also have the similar expertise. We have to treat them equally and give them equal status. Then our children will be able to develop programmes on their own," said BB governor.
Dr Salehuddin said: "We cannot improve the quality of banking sector just by adopting new technology. We have to provide faster service to the customers. There is no point to keep the customers waiting in queue for two hours."
The customer service should be upgraded time to time, the Bangladesh Bank Governor added.
On NCC Bank's plan to reach remote areas through setting up more branches across the country, Dr. Salehuddin said the bankers should make hard-earned remittances easily available to the beneficiaries at the quickest possible time, which will encourage the expatriates to use the banking channel for overseas fund transfer.
He also asked to lower the charge for the delivery of remittance. "If $200 is sent and you charge $20 for the service then it cannot be termed as customer-friendly. You have to ensure lower cost."
Tofazzal Hossain, chairman of NCC Bank, earlier in his speech mentioned that the bank wants reach remote areas so they have a plan to increase the number of branches across the country from the current 56 to 100.
Terming the implementation of online banking a milestone, Mohammed Nurul Amin, managing director of the bank, said it will be helpful for the customers and they will get prompt services from any branch.
The CEO of Flora Systems Mostafa Rafiqul Islam and Head of IT of NCC Bank Tapan Kanti Sarkar gave presentation on real time online banking.
Later, Dr Salehuddin inaugurated the bank's real time online banking system and cut a cake to mark the ceremony.
