Avijit killing: FBI to deploy team
Wednesday, 4 March 2015
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will "shortly" send a "small team" to Dhaka to assist Bangladeshi law enforcement agencies investigate the brutal murder of writer-blogger Avijit Roy, report agencies.
The decision came after the Bangladesh government accepted the US offer to engage the FBI in the investigation process.
Avijit Roy is a naturalised US citizen.
"The FBI will deploy a small team to Bangladesh shortly," Spokesperson of the US Embassy in Dhaka Monica L Shie told UNB on Tuesday.
She said the US Embassy's FBI representative has been in contact with Avijit's family and is communicating with the police here.
She said the "most important role" of US embassies around the world was "to protect and provide assistance to US citizen living abroad"
"We offer assistance in the context of that mandate".
Another report adds, six US Congressmen have urged US Secretary of State John Kerry to make sure that those behind the brutal killing of Bangladesh-American blogger Avijit Roy are brought to justice.
"The United States cannot allow extremists to operate with impunity. We must stand strong for freedom of speech and freedom of thought," said the letter signed by Congressmen Mike Honda, Ed Royce, Eliot Engel, Grace Meng, Steve Chabot and Ami Bera.
