Awaiting a design center
Thursday, 19 June 2008
The demand for establishing a design center has been raised from time to time. Recently, it was raised by the sector's stakeholders again at a seminar. Geetiara Safia Chowdhury, a former adviser in the present caretaker government had assured all concerned that a design center would be set up under Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC). But this legitimate and outstanding demand remains unmet. In the past, all the democratic governments had given such assurances but due to reasons unknown it did not materialise.
The demand for a design center for handicraft and handloom items is not new. The people, involved in the development of the sector, make their own designs. These people are helping the poor survive. They feel the need for a design center as their creative designs are copied on a mass scale for which they can't compete internationally. A design center can undertake research and market survey to support people having initiatives.
Can we expect that the present government would set up a design centre to fulfil the outstanding demand?
