Awami League leader slain in Naogaon

A local Awami League (AL) leader has been killed allegedly by leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami in Naogaon following disputes over land. The dead is Amzad Hossain, 35. Police and local people said Amzad and Mozaffar Hossain, superintendent of a local madrasa, had a longstanding dispute over possession of a piece of land at Bohar in Raninagar upazila. Mozaffar, also a leader of the local unit of Jamaat, and 20-25 of his associates allegedly attacked Amzad with sharp weapons when he went to cultivate the land on Sunday. They stabbed him indiscriminately and at, one stage, cut off a leg of Amzad and tendons of the other. Seven to eight of Amzad’s followers were also injured when they tried to stop the Jamaat activists. The AL leader died from profuse bleeding when he was being taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, police said. Amzad’s supporters later vandalised and set fire to the houses of Mozaffar and several other Jamaat activists. At least a dozen people, including women, were injured in the mayhem. Being informed, a police team, led by ASP KL Sarkar, rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Amzad’s wife Fahima Begum filed a case over the murder. Police arrested Habibar Rahman, Bulu Ahmed, Inamul Haque and Shafikul Haque for their suspected link with the murder, according to bdnews24.com.
