Awareness of the consumer protection ordinance
Sunday, 24 August 2008
AT last, the much-talked about draft law to protect consumers interest has been approved ending a long debate and also complications. The present caretaker government has just approved it. It is believed that it would be difficult to make the law by any democratic government in this country.
But the proposed law or ordinance only partially meets the demand of the consumers to protect their interest in a sellers' market. The consumers can expect to get a better deal in the unbridled market system. At least some of the anomalies they face while buying any product would go, they expect.
But from the past experiences, it can be said that without creating awareness about the consumer rights and proper implementation of the law, no one would benefit from it. The loopholes in the law need to be scotched to protect the consumers' interests.
Awareness must be created using mass media for the consumers as well as the members of the business community to know what the law stands for. They must get a clear picture of the ordinance.
