CHITTAGONG, Oct 19: The Trust Transport Service under Army Welfare Trust (AWT) has introduced modern, air-conditioned taxicab service in the port-city.
The rental taxicabs will be stationed in Lalkhan Bazar and Chittagong Stadium areas. The octane-driven vehicles will have GPS (global positioning system) technology and video camera inside. So, there is no chance of missing any valuable from inside the cabs, said officials concerned.
Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader and Chief of Bangladesh Army General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan handed over keys to three drivers at a function at Chittagong Cantonment on Sunday morning.
Obaidul Quader in his speech said the government has undertaken a project to build a marine drive from Mirsarai of Chittagong to Cox's Bazar. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has instructed the authorities concerned to complete feasibility of the project very shortly.
Time will come when the region, ranging from Chittagong to Cox's Bazar, will be the centre of all economic activities of the country, he said.
Organizers said a total of 150 taxicabs of AWT will ply the port-city roads from December. In the first phase, 26 AC taxicabs will be operated, and the number will gradually increase. They have a plan to run 600 taxicabs on the streets of Dhaka and Chittagong.
