Azad for eliminating division among journalist community

Information Minister Abul Kalam Azad urged the journalists to take vow to eliminate all sorts of division among the journalists' community in the greater national interest.
"Too many factions among journalists are harmful for the community itself ", the minister said.
He was speaking at the annual general meeting (AGM) of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) at the Jatiya Press Club auditorium as chief guest Saturday, reports BSS.
The DUJ President Shah Alamgir presided over the meeting while Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) President Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, Secretary General Altaf Mahmud and DUJ General Secretary Omar Faruque were present.
Presidents and general secretaries of DUJ and BFUJ were also present on the occasion.
In his speech Mr Azad remarked media's role in making a balanced society by ensuring transparency and accountability in every sphere of life for carrying forward the country towards a powerful democracy.
The minister said the government believed in free flow of information. "I can tell you (journalists) with highest emphasis that the government has no control over the media," he added.
He expressed his hope that no media people would publish baseless or unrealistic news, which might harm the country's interest.
Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury came down heavily on the existing wage discrimination between the government officials and journalists.
He said most of the journalists were still deprived of getting their salaries as per the provisions of the 7th wage board award due to non-implementation of the hard-earned wage board award.
Sobhan said the journalists' community did not want to accept businessmen to be the editors of media house having no experience in journalism.
Altaf Mahmud said the journalists' community wanted to resolve all accumulated grievances with the industry in a coordinated effort.
Shah Alamgir pledged for working together with journalists for protecting the common interests of the media people.
Omar Faruque demanded for immediately constituting the 8th wage board for enhancing wages and allowances of the journalists, media employees and workers to adjust with recent rise in salaries of the government officials and employees and cope with the exorbitant price hike of essentials.
