Thursday, 3 September 2009
Azad Group chairman Abul Kalam Azad Wednesday secured bail in the fraud case filed against him Sunday, reports UNB.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ehsanul Haque granted him bail upon a bond of Tk 50,000 with two guarantors after hearing both sides in the afternoon.
Police filed the case against the self-made man in business arena on charge of tampering with the design of RAJUK and revenue stamps.
"Azad, detained in Dhaka central jail, may walk to freedom anytime, as there is no legal bar to his release," said his counsel.
On Sunday, he was granted bail in the first case filed against him on charge of assaulting a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) inspector in which he was arrested.
Paltan police arrested Abul Kalam Azad on Thursday night following the police-assault case filed by CID Inspector Golam Sarwar.
Meanwhile, a delegation of the business community, led by FBCCI president Annisul Huq, Tuesday met Home Minister Sahara Khatun, her deputy Shamsul Haq Tuku, and Commerce Minister Faruk Khan to demand judicial inquiry into the allegations against Abul Kalam Azad.
They raised a question: "When killers are getting bail, why a business magnet should not get bail?"
Later, the Home Ministry formed a 2-member inquiry committee, headed by joint secretary of the ministry Md Iqbal Khan Chowdhury, to investigate the affairs leading to the arrest of Azad. The other member of the committee is deputy secretary Rashedul Islam.
