FE Report
Police arrested Abul Kalam Azad, chairman of Azad Group, from a city hotel at Purana Paltan Thursday night for his alleged attempt on the life of a CID (Criminal Investigation Department) inspector, police said.
An officer of Paltan police station told the FE that they arrested Azad from a room of Hotel Grand Azad, which is owned by him, at about 11:00pm following a case filed by a CID inspector Golam Sarwar against the Azad Group chief.
Quoting the FIR (first information report), the police officer said the CID inspector Sarwar, the plaintiff in the case, alleged that he along with his brother Nasiruddin went to meet Azad at his chamber at the hotel at about 9:30pm with a job appeal for his brother.
Azad got angry when the visitors, without any prior notice, entered his room (1205) while he was working on his personal computer. This led to an altercation and at one stage of the row Azad along with his other employees of the hotel beat them up heavily, the FIR stated.
"They (Azad and his employees) tried to kill me," the complainant mentioned in the FIR.
Sarwar was rushed to Rajarbagh Police Lines Hospital for treatment while his brother was given first aid from a city clinic.
"The CID inspector went there with a job appeal for his brother," Sub-Inspector of the police station Rifat said.
She also said Sarwar had earlier gone there at noon but can't get Azad's appointment. When they again went there without informing him that seriously disturbed Azad, resulting in the incident.
Later Azad was taken on a one-day police remand when he was produced before a CMM (Chief Metropolitan Magistrate) court Friday noon.
The police took him to the magistrate Muhammad Abdur Rahim seeking a five-day remand prayer to grill him over the case, which was strongly opposed by Azad's lawyers.
But the magistrate granted a one-day remand after dismissing the bail petition submitted by Azad's counsels.
