Azad urges media to help eliminate militancy, contain corruption

Information Minister Abul Kalam Azad Monday urged the media to help implement the Right to Information (RTI) Act, eliminate militancy and contain corruption, reports BSS.
"People will have easy access to information if they know their rights and remain aware about them," the minister said.
He observed that public awareness would also ensure transparency and accountability at all levels.
The information minister was addressing a function for giving 'Best Reporters Award 2009' of Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) at DRU in the city.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid also spoke on the occasion.
The information minister said that the government gave licences to 12 television channels and 14 community radios for better flow of information, which is necessary to make a strong relation between the government and the people.
Nahid lauded the media for quality journalism, which, he said, is contributing a lot to the national development.
He also urged the media to come up with constructive criticism so the government could take necessary steps to protect public interests.
Six journalists of from the print and electronic media were awarded for their outstanding contribution to reporting on
different issues.
The recipients are Shawkat Hossain Masum of Prothom Alo for reporting on objective economic issue, Siddiqur Rahman Khan for reporting on education in New Age, Munni Saha from ATN News for in-depth reporting, Helal Uddin from the daily Jugantor for in- depth reporting on economy, Tarun Sarker from the daily Jaijaidin for sport reporting and Azizul Parvez for reporting on Liberation War in the daily Samakal.
Each recipient got a crest and cash money of Tk 50,000.
A host of fellow journalists along with DRU President Shamim Ahmed and Secretary Pathik Shaha attended the programme.
