Babar indicted for tax evasion

A Dhaka court has framed charges against former state minister for home affairs Lutuzzaman Babar in a tax evasion case. The court of Dhaka’s Special Judge Rezaul Islam set September 12 for witnesses’ deposition in the Tk 26.5 million tax evasion case. Babar was present at the time of hearing on Wednesday, where he had pleaded innocent. His counsel sought more time before the charge framing but the judge rejected the plea. In Feb 2010, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) filed the case against Babar, accusing him of concealing information of wealth worth Tk 80.6m as a director of Master Electronics Ltd. According to the case details, the former BNP minister owed Tk 26.5m in taxes, according to bdnews24.com.
