Baby stolen from DMCH rescued in Gazipur

Thursday, 28 August 2014

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel on Thursday rescued a newly born baby stolen by suspected baby lifters from the Infant Ward of the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) earlier this month. The RAB action followed a High Court ruling issued on Wednesday directing the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka to immediately assign a magistrate to conduct an investigation into the stealing of a newborn at the DMCH. The HC also ordered the law enforcers to provide assistance to the magistrate concerned during the judicial enquiry and to provide security to the family of the missing child. A woman, Ruma Akhter, gave birth to a pair of twins at the Infant Ward of the DMCH on August 20. However, one of her babies was stolen in the morning of August 21. None of the 53 CCTV cameras at the DMCH had been in use when the baby was stolen, according to private TV channels.
