FARIDPUR, Nov 27: The farmers of Faridpur are reluctant to buy Rabi crop seeds supplied by the BADC as its price is about two times higher than those found at the local seed markets.
But deputy director of BADC (Seed Division) Sayed Ezaz Hossain is apparently happy over selling of their seeds through mass campaign at field level.
Recent fields visit at the corporation's seed selling centres show that each kilogram of quality paddy seeds is selling at Tk 35 while the farmer-produced seed is selling in the market at Tk 15 per kg. Besides, wheat seed of BADC is selling at Tk 42 compared to the market price of Tk 25 and potato seed at Tk 23 to 25 instead of Tk 18 to 20 for each kilogram at the market.
The price differences are also evident for pulse and oil seed. Each kilogram of BADC branded lentil seed costs Tk 84, while its open market price is Tk 70. The BADC price of mustard is Tk 80 while it is Tk 50 in the market. Mug dal at sells Tk 67 but the market rate is only Tk 43 per kilogram. Motor dal's price is 56 while market price is 35 taka.
Due to reluctance of the farmers to buy BADC seeds, the corporation, district administration and agricultural extension department carried on a massive campaign and achieved a lot of success by selling their quality seeds.
In this connection deputy director of BADC seed division Sayed Ezaz Hossain told this correspondent that they have already sold 90 per cent paddy, 50 per cent wheat, 70 per cent potato and 50 per cent of pulse and oil seeds among the farmers through 239 seed dealers in the greater Faridpur district.
Md. Abdul Hai, a dealer of BADC seeds said they are counting losses by selling these seeds, the prices of which are actually much higher than the available market prices. He also added that they have lost their willingness to buy foundation seed from BADC after the corporation withdrawal commission system from it. We are only marketing BADC seeds to support good will of my business, he said.
