RAJSHAHI, Jul 13 (UNB): Workers' Party Politburo member Fazle Hossain Badsha withdrew his candidature for mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) Sunday, as the 14-party combine changed their nominee to put an end to a tug-of-war over the coveted seat.
Badsha, once a popular student leader and former vice president of the Rajshahi University, took the decision as the Awami League-led 14-party combine finally fielded Khairuzzaman Liton of the Awami League in the race.
"I withdrew my candidacy on my own in an effort to keep the non-communal democratic force united," Badsha told reporters after withdrawing his candidacy around 4.30pm from the Rajshahi deputy election commissioner's office.
Former BNP lawmaker Jahan Panna also withdrew from the run on the last day for withdrawal of nomination for the August 4 election to Rajshahi and three other city corporations as well as nine municipalities.
