CHITTAGONG, Nov 17: In view of price hike of raw materials such as flour and ata, most of the bakeries and confectionaries in different parts of the port city are facing closure, sources said.
Meanwhile, manufacturing of food items in a good number of bakeries including some reputed biscuit factories has been stopped.
Chittagong Bakery Owners Association (CBOA) sources said some bakery owners have been compelled to wind up their business because of mounting prices of raw materials.
Sources said unbridled price hike of raw materials has a negative impact on bakery industry in the area. As the price of the raw materials of bakery items is not consistent with the selling price of the manufactured ones, hundreds of bakeries are incurring losses.
If the persisting situation continues, thousands of workers are apprehended to be unemployed in near future, they added.
The CBOA, in a meeting Saturday, called upon the government and concerned authorities to take effective steps for survival of bakery industry in the district.
