Bamboo products in Nilphamari giving in to plastic wares

NILPHAMARI, Jan 25: Traditional bamboo craft is in dire straits in the northern region including Nilphamari district because of its declining demand and other reasons.
Sources said there are hundreds of people involved in the production of bamboo crafts in the villages all over Nilphamari district. Some of them are aboriginals women and bamboo products are their main source of income.
Lately bamboo products are gradually losing demand due to rapid expansion of plastic industry. Bamboo products include baskets, fishing equipment, kitchen and household equipment implements and so on. Bamboo baskets are widely used for carrying betel leaf and seasonal fruits specially mango, potato, papaya, guava and jujube.
Sources added to save the ailing cottage industry need based steps should be taken to create demand of the bamboo products in local and regional markets and remove obstacles in the way of its expansion.
